Forrester Savell mixes "Ghost" by Karnivool

Mixing Karnivool presents a challenge that goes beyond making individual instruments sound huge. The bass needs weight and character while leaving room for the kick. Guitars need enough presence to carry the heavy sections without burying the details that give the arrangement its depth. Working with the multitracks for “Ghost” gives you an opportunity to tackle those competing demands yourself, building a mix where the rhythm section feels connected and each instrument has a clear role.

Equally important is preserving the song’s emotional impact. Ian Kenny’s vocals need to remain a focal point without feeling disconnected from the instruments, and the mix needs room to breathe so that intensity comes from contrast as well as volume. Those decisions make this session especially valuable for anyone working on progressive rock, alternative metal, or music that balances heaviness with atmosphere.

Get the multitracks, build your own mix, and watch Savell work through “Ghost.” It’s an opportunity to connect individual mixing decisions to the bigger picture: how to make a complex arrangement feel cohesive, immersive, and powerful without losing the character of the band.
