Will Putney

Will Putney is a producer, mixer, engineer, and musician known for his work on some of the heaviest and most respected records in modern metal and hardcore. With a career that spans over 15 years, Will has become one of the most sought-after names in heavy music production, shaping the sound of bands like Knocked Loose, Every Time I Die, Fit For An Autopsy, The Ghost Inside, Body Count, Thy Art Is Murder, and many more. His work is known for its crushing impact, clarity, and raw emotional energy.

Will is also a founding member of the band Fit For An Autopsy, where he serves as guitarist and primary songwriter. He remains an active member of the band, balancing his role as a musician with his full-time work as a producer and mixer. His experience on both sides of the studio glass gives him a unique ability to understand what artists need and how to capture their best performances.

Based out of Graphic Nature Audio, his recording studio in New Jersey, Will has built a reputation for producing records that feel intense, authentic, and sonically powerful. His mixes are known for their aggressive low end, tight rhythm sections, and vocals that cut through with clarity and force. He has a sharp ear for arrangement and knows how to guide bands through the recording process in a way that elevates their sound without losing their identity.

Will’s production style focuses on capturing the essence of a band rather than forcing them into a mold. He is known for his collaborative approach, helping artists push their creative boundaries while staying true to their roots. His sessions are efficient but never rushed, with an emphasis on performance and energy over excessive editing or post-processing.

In addition to his work in the studio, Will is also a founding member of Better Lovers, a heavy music supergroup formed in 2023 featuring members of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Every Time I Die. Although this band is a more recent addition to his resume, it reflects his ongoing commitment to creating and performing heavy music at the highest level.

Will has also contributed to the development of recording tools and educational content for the production community. His sessions with Nail The Mix provide an inside look at how some of the most intense and emotionally resonant heavy records are made. He shares his workflows, plugin chains, tracking strategies, and mix philosophies, making his sessions invaluable for both beginners and seasoned engineers.

We’re also very proud to work with him on his course, “How It’s Done w/ Will Putney”.

Whether he’s producing a rising band’s breakout record or performing on stage with one of his own projects, Will Putney brings passion, precision, and authenticity to everything he does. His influence on the sound of modern heavy music is undeniable, and his work continues to shape the future of metal and hardcore for the next generation of artists and producers.
