Joey Sturgis

Joey Sturgis is a producer, mixer, and entrepreneur who helped define the sound of modern metalcore and post-hardcore throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Known for his polished, punchy mixes and his innovative use of digital tools, Joey has worked with genre-defining bands such as Asking Alexandria, The Devil Wears Prada, Of Mice & Men, Attack Attack!, blessthefall, and We Came As Romans. His work brought a new level of clarity and impact to heavy music, influencing an entire generation of producers and artists.

Originally from Connersville, Indiana, Joey began his career as a self-taught producer, working out of a home studio and learning by doing. His breakout moment came with The Devil Wears Prada’s early records, where he served as producer, engineer, and mixer. Joey was never an official member of the band, but his creative role in shaping their early sound was so significant that he is often associated with their rise. His work with Attack Attack! also played a huge role in popularizing the “electronicore” sound, blending synths, breakdowns, and clean vocals into something fresh and impactful.

Although Joey was never a performing member of any of the bands he produced, he became a vital part of the creative process behind the scenes. His studio approach was highly involved, often working closely with bands on arrangements, tones, and performance direction. Many artists credit him not just with making their records sound good, but with helping define their artistic identity.

Joey’s production style is known for its tight, modern drum sounds, aggressive guitar tones, and meticulously edited vocals. He was an early adopter of in-the-box mixing and editing, helping prove that massive-sounding records could be made without the need for expensive studios or analog gear. His signature sound quickly became one of the most recognizable in heavy music.

Beyond his work in the studio, Joey is also a successful entrepreneur and educator. He is the founder of Joey Sturgis Tones (JST), a company that develops audio plugins and tools designed for modern producers. JST products are used by thousands of engineers around the world and have become industry staples for achieving professional results quickly and efficiently.

Joey is also the co-founder of URM Academy and Nail The Mix, where he shares his knowledge with aspiring producers and engineers. Through his mix walkthroughs and educational content, he has helped demystify the recording process and made high-level production skills more accessible than ever before.

Although Joey has recently been less active as a full-time producer, his legacy in heavy music remains undeniable. His influence can still be heard on countless records, and his tools, techniques, and teachings continue to shape the future of music production.

Joey Sturgis helped build the foundation for the sound of a generation, and his contributions continue to resonate with artists and producers around the world.
